Spoma Jovanovic and Cathy Hamilton, long-time advocates of service-learning and community engagement, will be teaming up with North Carolina Campus Compact to provide leadership for the Compact’s online jounal Partnerships: A Journal of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement.
Partnerships recognizes that successful engaged learning depends on effective partnerships between students, faculty, community agencies, administrators, disciplines, and more. The articles in this peer-reviewed journal focus on how theories and practices can inform and improve such partnerships, connections, and collaborations. Studies co-authored by faculty, students, and/or community partners; or examining practices across disciplines or campuses; or exploring international networks are all encouraged. The journal is published two times per year, and is open-access hosted online at the UNCG library website.
Jovanovic, associate professor of communication studies (community, ethics, and social change), will be the Journal’s new editor. She will pursue the journal’s vision and engage increasing numbers of faculty and leaders in developing the journal. Jovanovic recently received NC Campus Compact’s 2012 Robert L. Sigmon Service-Learning Award for her commitment to integrating service-learning into her curriculum, to training other faculty in service-learning, and to sustained, service that has impacted her community and profession.
Hamilton, Director of the Office of Leadership and Service-Learning (OLSL), will be joining the editorial board as book editor. A longtime supporter of the Compact, Cathy is well-networked and will ensure faculty and staff have opportunity to contribute to the journal, and that all readers will be introduced to the most recent and helpful publications promoting engagement partnerships.
UNCG will also serve as the new virtual host of Partnerships, and will be hosted on UNCG’s website. The technical team from University Libraries is headed by Stephen Dew.
Prior to this summer, the Journal was led by a devoted team at Appalachian State University. Dr. Norman Clark at Appalachian State University served as the first technical editor who helped realize the vision of his faculty development initiative team to create a fully online, peer-reviewed journal that contributes to strengthening higher education partnerships and engagement. Appalachian State has hosted the journal since it’s inception in 2009, and has ensured reader and write accessibility. Dr. Rebecca Dumlao at East Carolina University served as the first book editor, and Dr. Beth Warner at Elon University has helped to make the transition between editors.
