2016 Gulf-South Summit on Service-Learning and Civic Engagement through Higher Education: Call for Proposals

Posted on October 01, 2015

Request for Proposals for the 2016 Gulf-South Summit on Service-Learning and Civic Engagement through Higher Education.

Deadline:  October 30, 2015

ALL Aboard!

Help us develop best practices and explore new frontiers in service-learning and civic engagement. We are especially interested in presentations that highlight the complexity of inclusive community development, techniques for dialogue and deliberation as democratic practice, best practices in student leadership for civic engagement, and community-engaged scholarship.

The proposal submission form will ask presenters to indicate what format is ideal for their presentation (see below), the level of the intended audience (Introductory, Experienced, Both) and what audience(s) they hope to address: faculty/practitioners, administrators, community partner agencies, students, or all audiences.

There are 5 presentation formats available to practitioners and researchers:

Individual Presentation
An individual presentation is a brief, 30-minute presentation where presenters may share information on a topic of their choice. Presentations will be scheduled on Thursday, April 14 and Friday morning, April 15.

Panel Discussion
A panel discussion is a 75-minute Q&A session with co-panelists assembled by a primary presenter. A panel discussion should involve 3 or more individuals offering various perspectives on one topic. Panelists from different organizations and/or institutions are encouraged. Panel Discussions will be scheduled on Thursday, April 14 and Friday morning, April 15.

Interactive Workshop
An interactive workshop is 75 minutes and should engage participants in activities that offer insight, practice, or instruction relevant to the topics discussed in the workshop. Interactive Workshops will be scheduled on Thursday, April 14 and Friday morning, April 15.

Poster
Posters (visual display) are ideal for descriptions/models of civic engagement projects and programs. Posters will be on display during the entire conference and poster presenters should plan to attend the opening poster session. All other session proposals will also be considered for acceptance as a poster presentation. The Poster Session is scheduled for Wednesday April 14 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm.

Student Showcase
New this year! A two-hour Student Showcase will highlight student leadership in service-learning and civic engagement; encouraging students to celebrate the triumphs, reflect on the challenges, and benefit from the experiences of student leaders doing work in service-learning and civic engagement. Proposals originate with undergraduate or graduate students and should be in a poster format, designed for a student audience, with a focus on challenges encountered and lessons learned. Presenters must participate in the Showcase on Thursday, April 14, from 3:15 – 4:45. All other session proposals will also be considered for acceptance as a Student Showcase poster presentation, if appropriate.
